  18. Measure, pencil, drill, chisel, mallet, padsaw,
  19. drill bits.

  24. Step 1 - Checking the size of the lock
  25. Check that the size of lock corresponds with the
  26. width of your door. Measure the thickness of the
  27. stile carefully. The instructions that come with
  28. the lock will tell you what size drill bits you
  29. will need.

  31. Step 2 - Positioning the lock
  32. Avoid placing the new lock near any other locks
  33. or near any cross piece joints that make up the
  34. door. It should be placed within the middle third
  35. of the door.

  37. Step 3 - Marking the door
  38. Use the lock as a template to mark its position on
  39. the door. Extend the marks round the edge of the
  40. door and mark the centre line on the doorÆs edge.

  42. Step 4 - Drilling the door
  43. Set the depth gauge indicator as required. Use the
  44. correct sized drill bit to bore a series of holes
  45. in the door along the centre line and within your
  46. guidance marks.

  48. Step 5 - Chiselling the recess
  49. Square up the recess, using a chisel to remove the
  50. excess wood. Ensure the lock is a snug fit.

  52. Step 6 - Inserting the lock  
  53. Insert the lock into the hole and mark the edges of
  54. its front plate on the door
  55.  
  56. Step 7 - Chiselling the faceplate recess 
  57. Use the chisel to edge the recess you have marked.
  58. Remove the excess wood in the manner shown.

  60. Step 8 - Drilling the key holes
  61. Hold the lock in position again on the inside and
  62. outside of the door and mark the position of the
  63. keyholes. Begin the holes with the drill and finish
  64. with a padsaw.

  66. Step 9 - Fitting the lock
  67. You are now ready to fit the lock and decorative
  68. faceplate if one is provided.

  70. Step 10 - Fitting the striking plate
  71. With the door open, operate the lock to the closed
  72. position and mark the lockÆs position on the frame.
  73. Use the method described earlier to dig out
  74. appropriate recesses for the striking plate.
