Step 1 - Checking the size of the lock
Check that the size of lock corresponds with the
width of your door. Measure the thickness of the
stile carefully. The instructions that come with
the lock will tell you what size drill bits you
will need.
Step 2 - Positioning the lock
Avoid placing the new lock near any other locks
or near any cross piece joints that make up the
door. It should be placed within the middle third
of the door.
Step 3 - Marking the door
Use the lock as a template to mark its position on
the door. Extend the marks round the edge of the
door and mark the centre line on the doorÆs edge.
Step 4 - Drilling the door
Set the depth gauge indicator as required. Use the
correct sized drill bit to bore a series of holes
in the door along the centre line and within your
guidance marks.
Step 5 - Chiselling the recess
Square up the recess, using a chisel to remove the
excess wood. Ensure the lock is a snug fit.
Step 6 - Inserting the lock
Insert the lock into the hole and mark the edges of
its front plate on the door
Step 7 - Chiselling the faceplate recess
Use the chisel to edge the recess you have marked.
Remove the excess wood in the manner shown.
Step 8 - Drilling the key holes
Hold the lock in position again on the inside and
outside of the door and mark the position of the
keyholes. Begin the holes with the drill and finish
with a padsaw.
Step 9 - Fitting the lock
You are now ready to fit the lock and decorative
faceplate if one is provided.
Step 10 - Fitting the striking plate
With the door open, operate the lock to the closed
position and mark the lockÆs position on the frame.
Use the method described earlier to dig out
appropriate recesses for the striking plate.
